Overview of Motera Stadium Gujrat
Sunil Gavaskar was the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket on this ground and Kapil Dev got his 432nd Test wicket and broke Sir Richard Hadlee’s record. In 2011 World Cup, India beat Australia in the quarter finals at this ground and two years later Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to score 30,000 runs in international cricket.
It was a regular Test and limited-overs venue but in 2015 GCA decided to rebuild the stadium and make it the biggest cricket stadium in the world. It was rebuilt at a cost of 8 billion. The redevelopment work was completed in 5 years and now it can accommodate 1.3 lakh cricket fans more than the Melbourne Cricket Ground which can accommodate 90,000 fans. The stadium is spread over 63 acres and has 4 entry points. The ground size is 180 yards x 150 yards. It has 4 dressing rooms and 6 indoor practice pitches and state of the art floodlights and covered stands. The stadium offers 360 degree unobstructed view of the field,
The pitch was bowler friendly in the beginning but as the years went by it lost its shine and became slow. In 2021 during India vs England Test series the pitch was heavily criticized as the 3rd Test between the two teams was over in just 2 days and England lost by 10 wickets. ICC then intervened and investigated the matter and rated the pitch as ‘average’.
